Designed by Kentaro Yasufuku, the headquarters of Riken Keiki Co. Ltd. in Tokyo is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in improving the work environment. Inspired by the French painting technique of matière, which involves overlapping materials to create perspective and smooth transitions, Yasufuku aimed to develop relationships between employees and enhance their creativity.
The interior of the building comes to life with vibrant colors and natural materials that overlap from one space to another. This design concept not only creates a visually stunning environment but also fosters a sense of unity among teams working in the office. By incorporating biophilic design principles, which draw inspiration from nature, the workspace provides a calming and refreshing atmosphere that improves workers' thoughts and well-being.
The use of natural motifs throughout the office reinforces the connection to nature. Carpets are designed to resemble gravel and grass fields, concrete pillars are transformed into trees, and patterns on stone facings mimic the flow of water. These elements create a sense of being close to nature, providing a unique working environment that promotes productivity and creativity.
The design team, led by Kentaro Yasufuku, carefully considered the specific challenges posed by the building's surroundings. With limited windows on three sides due to its location in a residential area, the team had to create perspective and smooth transitions within the interior design itself. The result is an innovative concept that not only improves productivity but also enhances the well-being of employees.
One worker expressed their satisfaction with the new office, stating, "With this office, coordination among departments is easy, and ideas come out in various places." This feedback reflects the success of the design in creating a collaborative and inspiring workspace.
The headquarters of Riken Keiki Co. Ltd. is a prime example of how innovative design can transform a traditional office space into a dynamic and creative environment. By incorporating the concept of matière and biophilic design principles, Kentaro Yasufuku has created a workspace that not only improves productivity but also enhances the well-being of employees.
